End of Life Care (EOLC): Embedding excellent care in the last days and weeks of life into routine practice in all settings
The EOLC team at UCLPartners has produced educational material that provides resources suitable for the training of all clinical and non-clinical staff, in acute hospitals in the care of patients, and those important to them, in the last days and weeks of life. The material has been developed in light of recent national publications related to EOLC.
The project, funded by Health Education North Central East London (HE NCEL), comprises a 17 minute film, 5 separate sets of teaching material (slides, facilitator notes, case examples) that can be used either alone or in conjunction with the film and evaluation tools. The material covers the following aspects of care in the last days and weeks of life:
- Recognition of deterioration
- Effective communication, including DNACPR decision-making and discussion
- Making an individualised plan of care
- Physical care at the end of life
- A reflective stand-alone 1 hour session to accompany the film
The Train the trainer sessions are aimed at staff who will act as champions in their trust. The sessions will demonstrate the film and teaching material, and train and support staff to enable its use and implementation in their trust. Data collection tools will be provided to evaluate its efficacy.
