Training Module 7: Understanding discrimination, hate crime and minority stress

About this event

Understanding discrimination, hate crime and minority stress

Did you know that 68% of LGBT people don’t feel safe holding hands with a same-gender partner in public for fear of discrimination? This module will discuss how discrimination takes place, addressing unconscious bias and the impact of minority stress on the health, wellbeing and safety of LGBT people. This module will enable you to recognise discrimination (both explicit and implicit) and feel more confident in challenging it. You’ll also be empowered with a range of signposting information to support LGBT people who have experienced discrimination, minority stress and hate crime.

LGBT Foundation's Training Academy

Our Training Academy is for anyone wanting to increase their knowledge and confidence of LGBT inclusion at home, at work and in the community.

LGBT Foundation’s grass-roots expertise and over 45 years experience means we work with over 40,000 people per year and reaching 600,000 people online. In particular, our Pride in Practice programme is nationally recognised - working with Primary Care services to elevate the experiences of LGBT people and create meaningful and sustainable changes. Building on a decades of success supporting LGBT people, we have developed the LGBT Foundation Training Academy; an online curriculum of LGBT training modules designed to help you confidently:

  • Navigate language and definitions relating to LGBT identities e.g. trans and non-binary
  • Understand the historical and national legislation that has, and continues to, influence LGBT people’s lives
  • Recognise the barriers and challenges that LGBT people experience within society, workplaces, healthcare etc.
  • Signpost to sources of support for LGBT people within your local area and online
  • Be an LGBT ally by identifying discrimination and making positive changes to challenge it

Completing LGBT Foundation’s Training Academy modules evidences your commitment to continual learning and supporting equality, diversity and inclusion into your personal and professional practice.

Following our Pride in Practice programme’s success in the healthcare sector, we have developed the LGBT Foundation Training Academy; an online curriculum of LGBT training modules. Whether it’s getting involved with targeted modules or the full training programme, every trainee will receive a certificate of completion to recognise their achievement and have the opportunity to become an accredited Training Academy Champion to demonstrate their leadership and commitment.
