About this Event

Carers supporting people with learning disabilities want to keep the person they care for safe and healthy. Spotting when someone is unwell can be difficult and sadly this means opportunities to help people at an early stage may be missed. We all want to make sure that any illness or cause of deterioration is spotted quickly, so people can get the right care for them.

As NHS organisations that work with both health and social care, we are providing train-the-trainer virtual training, to support you to train both paid and unpaid support workers caring for people with learning disabilities in the RESTORE2mini tool.

💻 Free, bite-sized training, an opportunity to ask questions and share with your peers.

💡 You will leave with practical next steps and more confidence in, planning delivery of training in your area.

What will I learn?

RESTORE2 is an award-winning physical deterioration and escalation package designed specifically for residential and nursing homes. Training carers to spot the signs someone may be unwell and know what they should do (RESTORE2mini ) has been specifically adapted for people with Learning Disabilities.

The tool can be used to support recognition of early soft signs of deterioration, taking observations, responding and escalate using a common language with other parts of the health and care system so that you can get the help you need quicker.

The escalation process uses SBARD (situation, background, assessment, recommendation and decision) which is a Human Factors based approach for communicating concerns.

The training aims to either refresh your existing knowledge or upskill if this is an area of practice you are less familiar with, and ultimately to give you the confidence to train others to manage these difficult situations.

RESTORE2 and RESTORE2mini were developed by West Hampshire CCG and the Wessex Patient Safety Collaborative, and are being rolled out in other areas across the country.

The West of England Academic Health Science Network (AHSN) and Wessex AHSN bring together all the key players innovating health and care in our regions.

We are two of 15 AHSNs across the country, established by NHS England in 2013. Since our launch, our priority has been to work across organisational and geographical boundaries, involving our entire network in both development and delivery to drive transformation that is based on genuine need, is successfully embedded and sustainable.

With our unique expertise and cross-sector connections, we understand both the ‘push and pull’ of demand on healthcare innovation. We actively nurture an innovation ecosystem around health and care, removing obstacles and bringing diverse groups together to conceive and maximise new ways of working.

Wessex PSC worked with West Hampshire CCG to co-produce RESTORE2, the physical deterioration and escalation tool for Care Homes based on the National Early Warning Score (NEWS2), and the RESTORE2mini Soft Signs based version. Subsequently Wessex PSC developed a series of training resources for RESTORE2 and RESTORE2mini and, together with the West of England AHSN and Health Education England, helped develop a series of videos about managing Physical Deterioration for Carers. Wessex PSC has also supported the implementation of RESTORE2 and RESTORE2mini in Care Homes and Domiciliary Care settings across England, the UK and internationally.

In 2020 Wessex PSC, the West of England AHSN, NHS England and NHS Improvement have combined to develop a version of RESTORE2mini in support of the Learning Disabilities Mortality Review (LeDeR) Programme for carers of people with a Learning Disability. One of the elements of that initiative is this training session which, together with some new and re-filmed videos has been designed to help Carers supporting people with learning disabilities to keep the person they care for safe and healthy.
