Training: Headon Warren, Isle of Wight
Event Information
Description
CITiZAN South West are planning to survey the eroding remains at Headon Warren, particularly the remains of Hatherwood Battery, this is being organised in collaboration with the National Trust. The battery was built in the 19th century to protect Alum Bay, however, due to ongoing soil erosion on this coastline the site was abandoned in 1903 although it was later re-used by the Royal Navy from 1940-1943.
Headon Warren also contains several round barrows which are being affected by erosion, this site is now owned by the National Trust and CITiZAN are working with them to train volunteers to record and monitor the archaeology of the area.
The training will consist of a classroom session on the evening of the 23rd November at Newtown Visitor Centre from 7pm-8:30pm. This will allow us to spend all day on site on the 24th and recording will be carried out from 9am to 4pm. Parking at the site is limited so once you have signed up please contact Lauren to discuss travel to the site (ltidbury@mola.org.uk).
Please remember to bring suitable clothing, the site is quite exposed on the coast so bring warm and waterproof clothing as well as sturdy footwear. Please also bring your own lunch and plenty of water.
Please note: spaces are limited so if you find you are not able to attend please contact Lauren on the email address above so we can offer your space to someone else.
