Training the Mind: Guidelines for a Happy Life

Half-day course

10am - 1pm

Cost: £20

Be introduced to some simple precepts from the ‘Lojong’ or ‘Mind Training” tradition that show us how to live a happy and meaningful life.

“Always rely upon a happy mind alone” – Geshe Checkewa

This course will make the spiritual advice of the ancient lojong (or training the mind) masters practical and relevant to the modern-day practitioner.

We will learn how we can overcome many of our bad habits of mind, be mindful or more positive and constructive ways of thinking while learning practical mental tools that will help us to integrate this practice into everyday life.

The teachings will be based on a set of pith instructions composed by Geshe Checkewa. They are particularly suited for modern times where distractions are plentiful, time to meditate is minimal and world is becoming increasingly toxic. It is said that although such times can make conventional spiritual practice very difficult, the training the mind practitioner can transform all these adverse conditions into opportunities for spiritual growth.

Each session will start with a breathing meditation to settle the mind and then a talk exploring the topic of the week. This will be followed by a concluding meditation to help us take the teaching to heart and an opportunity to ask questions.

This course is suitable for everyone from complete beginners to experienced meditators.

What will each session consist of?
Each session will include a combination of teachings and guided meditations with an opportunity to ask questions at the end and socialize with like-minded people during the break time.

Do I need to bring anything or wear anything special?
No. All sessions will take place on chairs but there are optional cushions if you prefer to sit cross-legged. You don’t need to bring anything else with you, but some people like to take notes during the session, so feel free to bring a paper and pen.

What if I’m new to this?
Everyone is welcome to participate in this course and will benefit both new and experienced people alike. Our reception staff will happily recommend some follow on reading or classes after the course if you are interested.
