Description

Explore 29 years of Tramway's history as an arts venue, with backstage tours, a drop-in workshop and a chance to delve into our archive. We are also collecting visitors' stories: tell us your tales of Tramway!

Tramway was launched as a direct result of the search for a venue that had the capacity to house what would be, in 1988, the only UK performances of Peter Brook’s Mahabharata. The unrivalled scale of the former tram depot, and the flexibility offered by its industrial architecture, meant that the building was uniquely placed to house such a momentous production. In 1989, the acclaimed British sculptor Andy Goldsworthy staged his now internationally renowned project Snowballs in Summer in what would become Tramway’s principal gallery space, Tramway 2. Join us for a backstage tour to explore the venue from the point of view of a performer or technician: perhaps you will catch a glimpse of a rehearsal during your visit! An archive will be displayed in our foyer, including past programmes and exhibition catalogues. Did you see the Mahabharata in 1988, or visit during the 1990 City of Culture? Did you join us for the Turner Prize in 2015? In advance of our 30 years anniversary in 2018 we are seeking your stories. On Sunday 17th September 2-4pm we are running a special edition of our TRYOUT Creative Drop-in workshop which is suitable for all ages: take part in an artist-led workshop exploring the conversion of our two largest rooms from industrial spaces to a 600-seater theatre and a vast visual art gallery, and the artworks they have contained over the last 29 years. Whilst you are here, why not explore the whole site? Our friend and neighbour The Hidden Gardens will be offering hourly tours from 1.30-5.30pm on Saturday 16th September, with an exhibition in the Boilerhouse.

Tour meeting point: Box office

Please note: A BSL interpreter will be available for the 2pm and 4pm tours on Saturday 16th: please advise when booking if you require this service.
