About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour

English is often the default language used in a global sustainable development context, but what about when English is not your first language or you don’t know English at all?

Communication is key to any working relationship to ensure mutual understanding and sharing of information and knowledge, however, when there is a barrier to communication, this can lead to frustration, friction and damaged relationships. At best there can be misalignment of intended aims, at worst mismanagement of projects resulting in poor outcomes. It’s our responsibility to ensure we have an up to date inclusive language policy that outlines decolonising our approach to communication when working with international partners and communities and shifting the burden and expectation that English will be spoken and understood.

Join us and professors Dr. Angela Crack of University of Portsmouth, Dr. Michael Chasukwa of University of Malawi and Hastings Saka all from the Translation Glossary Project. A research project aimed at reducing this barrier to communication through participatory workshops dedicated to creating a shared glossary for mutual understanding between those working internationally and local communities.

This session will discuss:

  • The identified research need and outcomes of addressing language barriers in sustainable global development settings
  • Delivery of the first Translation Glossary participatory workshops in Malawi
  • Results of the Translation Glossary Project and impacts
  • Opportunity for Q&A
  • Further resources on creating your own Translation Glossary

Format: 1 hr webinar and Q&A

Who is this for: Anyone working in an international capacity and working programmatically with communities for whom English is not their first language.
