Transforming your Future: PhD Placements and Employability
Fri 12 May 2017, 13:00 – 16:30 BST
Are you thinking of adding to your CV and developing your employability skills? Have you thought about a placement but are not quite sure how to apply, or where to apply? Why not come and find out about the type of research placement that some of our PhD students have been carrying out this year and how this has given them the opportunity to apply their research skills and develop professional networks with non-HEI organisations. Together with PG Careers Consultant, Darcey Gillie, we can discuss the opportunities for you to add to your CVs and to take your careers forward.
The Programme is as follows:
13:00 – 13:30 – Welcome, light refreshments will be served
13:30 – 14:30 – A group of former PhD placement students who have carried out placements at non-HEIs including: the British Library, Opera North, the National Football Museum and Artsmethods@manchester will deliver a short presentation about their placement experience, which will be followed by a question and answer session. Some have taken placements advertised by non-HEIs and others have proposed their own short research placement. The aim is to explain what they did, the challenges they encountered, and the benefits of their placement for their future careers.
14:30 – 14:45 Coffee/tea break
14:45 – 15:45 Dr Darcey Gillie will lead a workshop on careers and employability which will give you the opportunity to discuss the implications of placements/other forms of external engagement in the broader context of developing your employability skills.
15:45 – 16:30 – Summary and questions
