***THIS COURSE IS ONLY OPEN TO SGB STAFF, BOARD & HIGH LEVEL VOLUNTEERS, AND CSH STAFF***

This is an introduction to the topic of supporting trans-people participating or competing in sport at all levels and is suitable for CEO’s, Equality Lead Officers, Board members, Performance Directors and performance/ grassroots coaches (employed by the SGB). This workshop will include an update on the guidance issued by the IOC which will provide a framework through which SGB’s can develop their own policies.

Summary:

Are you able to engage trans-people within your NGB, as staff members, coaches, officials and participants? Do you know which organisations will help you to develop this area of work? Are you familiar with the IOC and UK guidance relating to trans-people participating or competitive in sport? If not, then this workshop is definitely for you.

Outcomes;

Staff who attend this workshop will be more confident when engaging with trans-people, able to identify barriers to participation and performance and be clear on the actions needed to remove any barriers.

Topics;

- Understanding appropriate language and terminology in relation to transgender people and the trans community
- Raising awareness and building knowledge within the staff and volunteer workforce
- Understanding the Equality Act 2010
- Defining barriers to participation and competition
- Reviewing the UK and IOC guidance on trans-people and competitive or recreational sport
- Identifying how to increase participation in your sport for trans-people at recreational and performance levels and who can help
- Agree the next steps

This is an introduction to working with trans-people within your sport who may be recreational participants or elite performers. Those attending should bring any sports specific examples with them, case studies and/or policies that they currently have in place. This may include any policies written by the European or World Governing Body which the SGB must adhere to for international competition.


Tutor/Deliverer:

Louise Tideswell – has over 20 years experience in local authority sports development with three local authorities and with two national governing bodies of sport. A skilled trainer and facilitator her specialisms include supporting many public sector sports organisations to be the best they can be by improving their knowledge relating to equality, diversity and inclusion. Louise is part of the team at Plan4Sport who has supported SGB’s through the Equality Standard for Sport since 2012 and developed new resources and best practice guides which have been published across the UK.

Lucy Faulkner – has over 20 years of experience working with and for national governing bodies of sport and organisations in the public sector. Specialisms include executive coaching, design and delivery of quality-assured learning opportunities and authoring of learning resources. Lucy was commissioned by the Sports Council’s Equality Group to develop a UK guidance document for Sports Governing Bodies to use when developing their thinking and policies in relation to transsexual people and competitive sport. This guidance document has been published and is being widely used by Governing Bodies.
