To Celebrate 50 Years of Democracy in SpainThe Instituto Cervantes is pleased to invite you to a special screening of the film:🎬 Ez, eskerrik asko! The Window of Gladys by Bertha Gaztelumendi, 2019

Politics and the StreetsOne of the most widely discussed critical readings of Spain’s democratic transition in recent decades highlights the crucial role of grassroots mobilisations in the recovery of freedoms and the advancement of civil rights during the 1970s. Far from being a top-down process, the transition was shaped from below by thousands of people who took to the streets—often facing harsh repression in return.

This section presents three films that explore different aspects of popular resistance: anti-Franco activism, street protests, and the violent responses they often provoked.

A standout in this selection is Ez, eskerrik asko! The Window of Gladys, a documentary that tells the story of Gladys del Estal, a young environmental activist killed by the Civil Guard in 1979 during an anti-nuclear protest in Tudela. The film not only revisits her tragic death, but also honours the memory of the Basque ecological movement and a generation that fought for justice, land, and life.

📽️ The film will be shown in Spanish with English subtitles.
