Transitions and Interdependence: Providing the Right Support for Young People moving on from care to support
Despite progress, Ofsted continues to highlight gaps in support for care leavers, as highlighted in Ofsted’s 2023/24 Annual Report. With new inspection focus and bold ambitions for lasting relationships, the call for change is clear. With a dedicated Ofsted judgment for care leavers now in place, and the ambition from the 2023 Social Care Review that “by 2027, no young person should leave care without at least two loving relationships”, the sector is being called to respond with clarity, compassion, and commitment.
The transition from care to adulthood is critical, and traditionally focused on achieving 'independence.' However, recent shifts suggest that adopting 'interdependence'- valuing relationships and community support-could lead to better results. The Supported Accommodation (England) Regulations 2023 set quality standards for ensuring adequate support during this transition. This training session draws on lived experience to explore how we move from policy to practice. Unpacking legislation, entitlements, and the real meaning of interdependence, centring relationships as the cornerstone of positive transitions.
Key Discussion Points
1. Redefining Independence: Examine the limitations of the traditional independence focus in pathway planning.
2. Embracing Interdependence: Discuss interdependence, supported by research and examples, and its advantages for care leavers.
3. Practical Applications: Explore strategies for integrating interdependence into practice, aligning with the Supported Accommodation Regulations 2023 and social care objectives.
4. Legislation & Entitlements: Exploring key legislation to support young people in getting the rights, support, and opportunities they are entitled to.
5. Social and Emotional Skill Development: Identify resources to bolster young people's social and emotional skills for smoother transitions.
Learning Outcomes:
● Gain empathy and insight into care leavers' experiences.
● Critically evaluate the drawbacks of the independence model and the benefits of interdependence.
● Learn to implement interdependence-oriented practices in compliance with current regulations.
● Access tools for developing essential life skills in young people.
"This training helped me see the power of relationships beyond the system. It gave me practical tools and a renewed sense of purpose, every young person deserves to feel they still matter after leaving our care."
