Translate MedTech - Intellectual Property for Medical Technologies

This training course will provide you with the information to confidently protect your technology, understand the differences between types of intellectual property, rights in property and ownership and how to exploit them .

Open to academics, researchers, clinicians and industry representatives, the one day course will cover:

  • What is intellectual property?
  • Patents, trademarks, designs and copyright
  • Ownership of intellectual property
  • intellectual property explotiation
  • Corporate Sales and Purchases
  • Policing your IPRs & Enforcement

By the end of the day, you will understand:

  • Understand the difference between patents, trademarks, copyrights and designs, and what protections they offer
  • Who owns what when you have a patent, trademark, design or copyright
  • Novelty requirements
  • Different ways of exploiting your intellectual property rights
  • What is an IP audit
  • How to expand into global markets


The training course will be run by John McDonough, Patent and Trade Mark Attorney at Hepworth Browne and Dr Roger Lowe, Proprietor of ip4all

About the trainers

John McDonough has over twenty years’ experience in private practice and is a partner at Hepworth Browne. John is qualified both as a patent attorney and trade mark attorney.

On the patents side John has extensive experience in patent drafting and prosecution, particularly in the fields of electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, medical devices and software.

John has extensive experience in the training of patent attorneys and sets one of the qualifying papers for UK patent attorneys on behalf of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys.

Dr Roger Lowe practiced as a solicitor between 1999 and 2003 – specialising in contentious and non-contentious intellectual property matters, covering the protection, exploitation and enforcement of technical inventions.

Since 2003, he has focused on working with start-up businesses protecting, exploiting and raising capital for various technical products within a variety of fields that include medical technologies.

Roger's academic background is in chemical metrology, having undertaken his BSc and PhD at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. His PostDoc research focused on the design and development of spectro-photometric instrumentation for the analysis of drinking water and the measurement of the rate of diffusion of nitro-glycerin from commercially available drug patches through skin and skin-mimetic agents.
