Transport for All archive launch event

Join us on Saturday 20th September, 2:00–4:30pm, as we launch Transport for All’s brand-new digital archive! The archive is a collection of stories, photos, videos, oral histories and memories that document decades of campaigning for accessible transport.

This event marks the culmination of a project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and co-produced with Transport for All members, campaigners, transport professionals and historians. Together, we have been uncovering and preserving the history of accessible transport in the UK, from early disability activism and powerful campaigns, to the personal experiences of Disabled people navigating public transport.

For forty years, Transport for All (and our predecessor organisations) have collected newspaper clippings, photos, campaign materials and testimonies. Now, these items are being brought together in a growing online archive that not only reflects the successes and struggles of the past, but also helps to inspire the work ahead.

Why this archive matters

Disability history is too often overlooked. By preserving and sharing the stories of campaigners, activists, and everyday transport users, we can ensure that the fight for accessibility; from wheelchair users chaining themselves to buses in the 80s and 90s, to the legacy of the 2012 Paralympics is remembered and recognised.

What to expect at the event:

  • A first look at the digital archive and exhibition pages
  • Insights from Transport for All members and our Steering Group who have helped co-produce the project
  • Stories and speeches from campaigners and community members
  • Opportunities to learn how you can get involved with the project, from submitting your own accessible transport stories, to contributing to future archive content
  • A big celebration, refreshments and cake!

This event is open to everyone who cares about transport, accessibility, and preserving disability history.
