Trauma, Homelessness and Priority Need
Date and time

Online event
Many people who have experienced trauma miss out on statutory housing assistance because of a lack of understanding around priority need.
About this event
This is a free webinar delivered by JustUs, Doughty Street Chambers Housing and Welfare Team and Expert Link.
The event brings together 6 amazing panelists from a range of backgrounds who will discuss different ways trauma can present in people’s lives, how it links to homelessness, and how it can leave someone vulnerable and thus in priority need.
Crucially, it will help professionals understand how someone’s vulnerabilities can be evidenced through the homelessness application process, opening up the potential to rehousing through the Housing Act 1996.
There will be wider discussion around these subjects too and a time for questions at the end. We want to promote and deepen the understanding that many single homeless people are in priority need as a result of trauma and are therefore entitled to housing assistance under the Housing Act 1996, rather than being restricted to supported accommodation options / rogue landlord properties / the streets.
The Panelists are as follows:
- Sarah Steinhardt (Barrister at Doughty Street Chambers and Deputy District Judge)
- David Ford (Founder and CEO of Expert Link)
- Dr Kostas Stagias (Consultant Psychiatrist)
- Paul Anderson (Former Head of Policy at Homeless Link and sociologist PhD researcher at Sheffield Hallam University)
- Adrian Henson (Mental Health Lead)
- Mike Hyden (Co-Founder of JustUs and Lead Trainer)
There will be a document with the panelists' individual bios attached if you'd like to know more about each of their backgrounds.
This is relevant to England only.
