Trauma Informed Practice in Criminal Justice

Professor Kieran McCartan, University of the West of England

We examine research and practice linked to trauma informed approaches as a way for understanding and responding to criminogenic behaviour. The session will take a multi-disciplinary approach to understanding trauma in the lives of people who offend, or have the potential too, considering the importance of life-course and developmental factors and how they tie into criminogenic behaviour. With that in mind the discussion will consider how better understanding trauma can help in rehabilitation, desistence, and community integration. We will end with some practical advice and guidance about how you develop trauma informed practices, a trauma informed workforce, and how these fit into ongoing risk management narratives.

Professor McCartan has a track record of public, academic, and professional engagement on criminological issues, including the causes of sex offending, and societal responses to sex offenders their risk management and reintegration incorporating past trauma and developmental criminology. Professor McCartan believes that sexual offending is a multidisciplinary issue that incorporates health, public health, psychological and societal factors.

Professor McCartan is the international representative on the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers board, the Conference Chair of National Organisation for the Treatment of Abuse, a member of the Confederation of European Probation working group on sexual offences, a member of the ethics committee of Brave hearts and has advised the Council of Europe, New Zealand Police, Braveheart's as well as Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Australia.
