Travel Geeks: how to plan the ultimate sailing trip (LIVE)
Date and time
A sailing trip is a great way to see a destination at your own pace.
About this event
Our first in person Travel Geeks event for 2022 will look at how you can plan your next adventure by yacht, from sailing the Indian Ocean to exploring the Mediterranean and beyond. Join us on 14 June, you'll also receive drinks and snacks throughout the evening. You can also look forward to a goodie bag courtesy of Sunsail, which includes from our award-winning rum drinks partner, Lost Years Rum, a miniature bottle of rum from their discovery gift box.
Advice on plotting your itinerary
If your sailing dream involves white-sand beaches on tropical islands, colourful harbours and isolated coral reefs, this event will help you achieve it. You could visit the real-life Treasure Island in the British Virgin Islands, dive wrecks in the Bahamas and snorkel through the clear blue waters of St Martin. Or explore the Mayan ruins and rainforests of Belize, find a spectacular beach for every day of the year in Antigua, harness the warm trade winds of Grenada or discover the mountainous beauty of St Lucia.
Thinking of the Mediterranean? The region is the ideal way to enjoy ancient history, beautiful scenery and great food and wine, whether you’re dotting around the islands along Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast, island hopping in Greece’s Ionian Sea or enjoying Italy’s stunning Amalfi Coast.
Help with the logistics
Whether you want to charter a yacht and plot your own course, have a sailing professional take the helm while you relax, or join a family-friendly sociable flotilla, we’ll have plenty of ideas and advice to help you organise the ultimate sailing trip. We’ll discuss setting itineraries for everyone: whether you're a beginner or an advanced sailor, and whether you want to sail the South Pacific or the Mediterranean. Introducing the panel:
Dee Caffari
In 2006, Dee became the first woman to sail solo, non-stop, around the world. She’s sailed around the world six times in total and is the first woman to have sailed single handed and non-stop around the world in both directions, as well as the only woman to have sailed non-stop around the world a total of three times. She’s been awarded an MBE in recognition of her achievements.
James Stewart
James writes regularly for The Times and Sunday Times, Financial Times and The Daily Telegraph. He has a special affinity for maritime stories, previously writing for specialist titles like Yachting World and Yachting Monthly. He’s sailed worldwide for more than 40 years — on everything from flotilla yachts in the tropics and rugged Arctic yachts to traditional working sailboats — and escapes to the UK’s east coast on his own boat at every available opportunity. He still harbours a plan to cast off one day for a six-month cruise.
Richard Falk
Born in Australia, Richard spent much of his childhood in, on or under the water. He gave up a successful corporate management career 24 years ago to turn his passion for the sea into a career, becoming a commercial master for both sail and power vessels. He has skippered in many of the major international yacht races, including a round-the-world event. Over the years, he’s been involved in rowing, sea kayaking, dive instruction, free diving, fishing and yacht racing. For the past 12 years, he’s had responsibility for the management of the RYA’s training schemes and publications business globally. He remains passionate about all forms of boating and endeavours to get afloat whenever he can.
Jack Atkinson
Jack Atkinson is an adventure photographer whose singular style has led to him travelling the world, working with clients including The North Face, Strava and Brompton Bikes. His curious nature and distaste for being indoors predates his photography career — a love of being outside led Jack to pick up a camera to capture his experiences and the stories of people he encountered along the way. When not behind the lens, Jack will be on a surfboard or paddleboard, in the sea, or up a mountain.
