Event description
Diving into the history, breadth and regional variations of Italian gastronomy

About this Event

Our panel of experts will help you turn a getaway into a delicious culinary adventure

We all know there’s more to Italian cuisine than pizza, pasta and red wine, but when it comes to planning a trip to sample the country’s regional food specialities, it can be difficult to know where to start. Modern Italian cooking has so much to offer, too, with an abundance of local ingredients inspiring chefs to draw on their surroundings in innovative and interesting ways. As well as a long history of wine-making, Italy’s reputation as the capital of coffee, Campari cocktails and other tempting drinks make it a place to enjoy a full culinary experience.

The panel will include Christine Smallwood, a food and travel writer who has written books about the people, places and food of Lombardy, Umbria and Puglia. Moderator Connor McGovern, assistant editor at National Geographic Traveller (UK), will lead a lively discussion on planning a trip to Italy based around food and drink, touching on regional dishes not to miss; the slow food movement; what to drink whereever you are and buying and cooking with local ingredients.

Whether you’re passionate about Pugliese bread or Piedmontese truffles, join us to learn how to put together the tastiest trip possible to Italy.

Moderator: Connor McGovern is assistant editor of National Geographic Traveller and has eaten a disproportionate amount of pizza for his 27 years. He once walked an hour for pistachio gelato in Milan, went wine tasting in Valpolicella and drove around what felt like all of Sardinia whilst discovering its traditional sweets.
