The act of writing and preserving ideas in this format is one of the unique characteristics of human beings—one of the things that sets our species apart. Just like drawings, writing is also a form of decoded imagery. Our writing habits—and beyond that, our writing gestures—communicate who we are. Small letters, large letters, legible or illegible handwriting, the amount of space we use on paper, and our favourite writing tools tell a story about us.
In this workshop, we propose a return to the practice of writing and reflecting, using travel as the central theme. There are many pre-made travel journals available on the market with structured pages for notes, expenses, currency conversions, and other details. However, in this workshop, we suggest using a simple, unlined notebook (or even making our own) with a sturdy cover so travellers can write comfortably even without a table.
Instead of long, text-heavy diary entries, we will introduce graphic facilitation tools that make journaling quicker and more meaningful. These include the use of keywords, visual metaphors, and supporting elements for building a visual narrative—such as colours, lettering, boxes, lines, arrows, shadows, people, and icons. We will also explore the use of visual dictionaries to help record ideas and places.
Travel is the focus of this workshop, so the visual dictionary will be themed accordingly, offering drawing ideas for transportation, landmarks, weather, clothing and luggage, food, and emotions. Each participant will receive this dictionary as a reference guide to inspire their creativity.
