About this event

Short Description:

This 2-day (weekend) workshop is aimed at counsellors, psychotherapists and others working in helping professions.

  • A highly interactive and practical workshop.
  • Ideal for those who want to acquire specific skills for working with young people who present with symptoms of anxiety.
  • Will help equip you with the knowledge and skills for working with young people and their parents.

Key Features:

  • Looks at what anxiety is and how to differentiate between, and thus work with, the various types of anxiety disorders e.g. obsessive compulsive disorder, generalised anxiety disorder, social anxiety, panic disorder, phobias, etc.
  • Explores several techniques and skills that are helpful when working with this specific population and also discuss ways of managing common difficulties associated with this work e.g. anger, silence, non-committal responses.
  • Considers why there seems to be a rise in anxiety in children and young people and ways of working with or alongside parents of children with anxiety.

About the Tutor:

Target Audience:

This workshop is open to anyone with an interest in the subject matter, wants to develop their skills and expand their knowledge. This workshop is particularly appropriate for training and practising counsellors, psychotherapists, counselling psychologists and other mental health professionals.

Dr Penny Utton (BSc (Hons), CPsychol.DPsych.AFBPsS)

Penny is a Chartered Counselling Psychologist with the British Psychological Society (BPS) and Registered Psychologist with the Health Professionals Council (HCPC).

Penny currently runs an independent practice, which includes work with families, children and young people as well as adult mental health, supervision, tailored training and legal work. She specialises in and has completed research on trauma, complex trauma, attachment and abuse.

Penny's background includes running a charitable counselling service for young people, as well as work within the NHS adult mental health and child and adolescent mental health services. She has also worked in student counselling and bereavement counselling, trauma and domestic abuse services, as well as acute and secure settings.

Penny is an integrative practitioner who is trained in cognitive behavioural therapy, schema therapy, psychodynamic and person centred approaches.

  • Sunday 4th July 10:00am - 16:00pm

  • Do not enter if you have displayed any symptoms of COVID-19 within the last 14 days or potentially been in contact with anyone who has had or displayed symptoms within the last 14 days.
  • Please adhere to social distancing guidelines at all times ensuring to keep 2 meters distance at least.
  • Do not share stationary or tools these should be kept for individual use.
  • All paperwork to be signed and sent electronically only.
  • Use hand wipes, gels or other sanitisers provided.
  • Ensure any equipment you are bringing on site has been cleaned and disinfected prior to coming onto site.
  • Please wash your hands on a regular basis.
  • Please cough, sneeze or blow your nose into tissues and dispose of these immediately, if none are available please cough or sneeze into your elbow and wash immediately.
  • Use any PPE required as per the sites rules.

We will be sending all attendees a COVID-19 Pre-Visit Declaration Form prior to the event.

This is an 'in person' workshop, based at Iron Mill's venue in Exeter. The running of this workshop as an 'in person' workshop is dependent on the Covid-19 restrictions and social distancing measures in place at the time of the workshop date. If Covid-19 restrictions are such that the workshop cannot go ahead in person, it will either be postponed or moved online. If this happens, all delegates will be contacted and offered the choice to re-book or receive a refund. We will review arrangements 2 weeks' before the event and inform you of any changes.
