About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

This interactive webinar will cover key, contemporary, evidence-based techniques for treating general anxiety disorder (GAD).The workshop is aimed at practising therapists and counsellors, students and trainees. Anyone with an interest in this area is welcome including anyone considering counselling as a career option in the future. A Certificate of Attendance confirming 3 hours CPD will be available to all attendees.

Anxiety disorders are highly treatable, yet only a third of those suffering receive treatment. Lifetime prevalence is around 5% of the population meet the criteria for GAD at any one time. Key symptoms include feeling nervous, anxious or on edge, not being able to stop or control worrying, insomnia and irritability. And yet the condition is highly treatable through psychotherapy.

There is scientific evidence that chronic worry in generalised anxiety is a result of unhelpful 'metacognitions' (i.e., beliefs about thinking) and behaviours. By targeting metacognitions and associated behaviours in therapy, levels of anxiety and distress can be alleviated. This workshop will focus on simple, practical techniques with a proven track record in helping alleviate the distress of anxiety. The role breathing, PMR and guided meditation for mindfulness will be reviewed alongside contemporary approaches to tolerance of uncertainty,

Consideration will be given to how these techniques can be applied by counsellors to manage our own stress.

The session will involve an online, anonymous, Ask The Audience feature to allow everyone the option to express the views, answer polls and share their ideas and experiences.
