Course objectives: 

The objectives for this workshop are to enable delegates to:

  • Learn to identify and understand the differences between some of the more common broadleaves and conifers found in Northern Ireland woodland. Assess whole tree.
  • Collect samples of leaves, twigs, bugs, seeds etc. to help ID
  • Develop the confidence to use tree books, keys etc. to identify new species

 

Duration: 

10.00am to 4.00pm

 

Agenda:

  • Welcome and introductions; brief review of day’s events and domestics.
  • Guided walk to take in wide range of suitable trees, including tree trail specimens. Collect samples
  • Lunch
  • Look up samples and ID using charts, books etc in pairs /groups
  • Powerpoint talk to illustrate tree ID points

 

Price: 

£15 for RFS members / £20 for non RFS members.  Free parking.

 

Notes:  

  • Refreshments and lunch are NOT included so please bring a drinks and packed lunch. 
  • Wear suitable outdoor clothing and footwear clean of forest debris and mud, and bring waterproofs.

 

About the location: 

Tollymore Forest Park is the location of the training event, with kind permission of the Northern Ireland Forest Service. Tollymore was bought in stages by the Ministry from the 1930’s onwards, contains a wide range of mature trees, and became the first state forest park in Northern Ireland in 1955. It also has one of the oldest arboreta in Ireland (1752) and a unique collection of mature forest trees in half-acre plots. We will be using material from these in the course of the day. It is located at Bryansford, near the town of Newcastle in the Mourne and SlieveCroob Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  

 

About the tutor: 

Malcolm is recently retired head of the Northern Ireland Forest Service, a position he held for 15 years. Malcolm is not only an authority on all forestry matters in Northern Ireland, he has also been a tireless advocate for forestry and a highly respected and well-regarded members of the UK forestry community. Malcolm was awarded an OBE for services to the environment in the 2019 New Year’s honours.
