Introduction to tree identification with John Morris at RFS Hockeridge & Pancake Woods

Location: Hockeridge & Pancake Woods and The Old School, Ashley Green, Buckinghamshire.
About: Learn to identify and understand the differences between some of the more common broadleaved trees and conifers found in Hockeridge & Pancake Woods, planted for forestry or as ornamentals. Also learn to assess the whole tree. Collect samples of leaves, twigs, bugs, seeds etc to help with identification and build confidence in your ability to use tree books, keys etc to identify new species.
Key learning outcomes:
a) Learning to identify and understand the differences between some of the more common broadleaved trees and conifers found in Hockeridge & Pancake Woods, planted for forestry or as ornamentals. Assess the whole tree seen in summer when trees are in full leaf.
b) How to collect samples of leaves, twigs, bugs, seeds etc to help with identification.
c) Confidence using tree books, keys etc to identify new species
Duration: 10.00am to 4.00pm
Price: £75.00 (RFS members) or £85.00 (non RFS members)
Note: Course attendees are advised to bring packed lunches as lunch is not provided.
About the tutor:
John Morris is a self-employed Woodland Manager, mainly in the Chilterns, and also works part time for Small Woods as Project Manager for the Small Woods ELM Test & Trial. He studied Biological Sciences at Exeter University. He has been giving advice and assistance on woodland management in the Chilterns for over 35 years. He has organized several conferences and training events. He is a long-standing member of the RFS and currently represents Oxon/ Bucks division on Council. John has been organizing volunteer workparties with the Chiltern Society in Hockeridge Wood since November 2014 and took on the role of woodland manager there in June 2017, so knows the woods well.
