Tree Identification - course overview and agenda

Hockeridge and Pancake woods are a 74ha block of woodland on the edge of Berkhamsted in the Chilterns on the Bucks / Herts county boundary. The woods are ancient but have been replanted since the 1950s with a wide mix of broadleaved and conifers. Many of these plantations have recently been thinned to favour broadleaved trees. Ornamental trees have been planted along a network of rides and a “tree trail” with 50 species marked.

Key learning outcomes:

1) Learn to identify and understand the differences between some of the more common broadleaved trees and conifers found in Hockeridge & Pancake Woods, planted for forestry or as ornamentals. Assess whole tree.

2) Collect samples of leaves, twigs, bugs, seeds etc to help ID

3) Gain confidence in using tree books, keys etc to identify new species
