Join The School of Art, Architecture and Design to plant 420 trees at Mudchute City Farm, using saplings from the Woodland Trust’s ‘Free Trees for Schools and Communities’ scheme. The project will create 100 metres of hedge for wildlife and offset up to 100 tonnes of carbon emissions over its lifetime.

All students and staff from the School of Art, Architecture and Design and the London Met Lab Empowering London module are welcome to join the planting event. There are morning and afternoon sessions to choose from and it is essential to book in advance.

Siân Moxon, Associate Professor of Sustainable Architecture, says, “We want every student to plant a tree during their studies to taking responsibility for their own ecological footprint alongside learning to influence others’ lifestyles through sustainable design and practice. It’s a fun day out and the saplings are small and easy to plant without any gardening experience.”

The project will plant a mixture of native tree species, including holly, hazel, crab apple, downy birch, hawthorn and goat willow, to provide habitat for wildlife while addressing carbon emissions. This supports the School’s commitment to Art, Architecture and Design Education Declares, the University’s work to address environmental challenges facing the capital through the London Met Lab, and the School’s research on urban rewilding and home-grown timber through its CUBE and CREATURE research centres.

PLEASE NOTE:

The activity is easy and you will be shown what to do, so no experience is necessary.

We recommend you wear warm, waterproof clothing and study shoes, as the site is a working farm and the activity takes place outdoors. Gloves will be provided for those who cannot bring their own gardening/DIY gloves.
