Event description
The amazing variety of Bermondsey's street trees

About this Event

A journey through Bermondsey with identification and stories related to some of its varied trees

Bob is both an environmentalist and an author. He wrote the acclaimed book Ghost Trees - Nature and People in a London Parish and also was the presenter on R4 The Passion in Plants, he is described in the Guardian an an 'urban botanical sleuth'.

Through the early decades of the 20th century, Bermondsey was a pioneering borough for the planting of street trees and still today supports a fascinating variety. This walk, a sequel to Bob's SLBI talk 'Tales from the Trees', will visit some of them, incorporating streets, parks, churchyards and river frontage. Including tips on the winter recognition of trees, it will tell the stories of how the different species came to be here and why they were chosen, their traditions and folklore, and their place in our social history.

Due to current guidelines there will be a total of 6 people on this walk and we will be observing social distancing and mask wearing please.

Walking on pavements, toilet facilities unknown at present.

Meet at Bermondsey Station at 2 pm.
