Event description
A half-day Drawing Session in association with Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2019 - Exploring Drawing Memories with Charmaine Watkiss

About this Event

Drawing Projects UK is pleased to present this half-day Drawing Session led by Charmaine Watkiss on Tuesday 21 January 2020 from 1pm to 4pm in The Chainstore at Trinity Buoy Wharf in London.

During this half-day Drawing Session you will explore ideas around memory and what they mean to each of us individually. Participants will be invited to use tracing and layering as devices to explore these ideas.this Drawing Session will explore the idea of collective experience and how we can use research in archives as a way of gathering material for drawings.

Please bring along a personal object to draw. Basic materials will be provided, but please bring any special materials you would like to draw with.

Charmaine Watkiss is a current exhibitor in the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2019, which is on show in The Chainstore at Trinity Buoy Wharf in London. Her drawing, The Return, evolved out of her research about indigo, once one of the worlds most valued pigments. This colour connects to the deeply mystical and also to great suffering, because it was one of the major crops of the transatlantic slave trade. The drawing explores themes around loss, collective memory, and ritual, as a way of piecing together a form of commemoration and layering multiple narratives from interconnected sources which allows the work to develop a story of its own.

Charmaine Watkiss studied BA Contemporary Media Practice at University of Westminster (1991-94); MA Drawing, Wimbledon College of Art, University of the Arts London (2016-18). Group exhibitions include: Thinking Graphite, Drawing Projects UK (2019-20); Out of Darkness, St John on Bethnal Green, London (2019); Lumen Residency Exhibition, The Crypt Gallery, London (2018); New Perspectives, The Centre for Recent Drawing, London (2017).

This Drawing Session is suitable for adults of all levels of experience in drawing.

This Drawing Session is part of an events and engagement programme accompanying the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2019 exhibition while it is on show at Trinity Buoy Wharf in London from 18 January to 1 February 2020. The exhibition is open daily from 11am to 4pm and is free to see.
