“Bologna la dotta, la grassa, la rossa”

Home to one of Europe’s oldest universities, Bologna is well deserving its nickname “La dotta” (the erudite). The University of Bologna was founded in 1088 by a group of intellectuals led by the famous Italian writer Giosuè Carducci. Over the years, famous scholars from all over Europe have come to study here, from Dante Alighieri and Thomas Becket, to Albrecht Dürer and Niccolò Copernico.

Bologna “la grassa”, “the fat” due to its delicious traditional cuisine. When visiting Bologna, hungry visitors should be sure to call into one of the city’s many “trattoria” to enjoy typical dishes like tortellini, lasagne and mortadella.

Bologna’s third nickname is “la rossa” or “the red” due to the colour of the roofs of the buildings. Obviously, you won’t be able to see this from the ground, so the best things to do is brave the climb (498 steps, we counted) and head up the tower “degli Asinelli”. This is one of the two towers that make up the symbol of the city, the other being Garisenda. (Legend has it that the Asinelli and Garisenda families who built the towers around 1110, were fighting for supremacy and decided that whoever could build the highest tower would gain the power of the city. We’ll let you decide for yourself who won.)

What we will be seeing (list is subject to change):

  • The Quadrilatero
  • Piazza Maggiore
  • Basilica di San Petronio
  • Torri degli Asinelli e Garisenda
  • Basilica di Santo Stefano (“Sette Chiese”)
  • Università
  • Finestra sul canale della Molina
  • Trattorie per cibo e vino tipico

We speak italiano

Our trips are not only a great way to see Italy, but also an easy way to learn the language and practise using it.
Don’t worry about your level of Italian, we create bespoke in-situation activities to make sure everyone gets to speak as much (or as little) as they want.

So, what’s involved?

For your peace of mind, the trip fee covers everything you will see and do:

Airfare & Transportation
Round-trip flights, from the UK, transfers to and from each airport, as well as public transport tickets and travel cards.

Hotels & Accommodation
Overnight stays in hotels. Breakfast is usually included and we all eat together in the morning.

Eat with the Locals
Lunchtimes are free times – we break up and everyone can eat where they like with whom they like. At dinner, we’ll take you to an authentic Italian restaurant, where you can experience the genuine taste of Italy and sample local cuisine. We split the dinner bill equally, alla romana, as we say in Italy, but everyone pays individually for what they drink, it’s only fair.

Guided sightseeing
The price you pay includes entrance to all the attractions we go to. You’ll also have the chance to visit the city alone or in small groups.

Full-time Guides
This is what separates us from the rest. As native teacher-guides, we’ll be with you throughout the day. When we are not telling you about local history or famous artwork, we’ll handle all on-tour logistics and other needs you may have. We will look after you from breakfast to the nightcap!

Learning the Language
We prepare unique language activities, games and tailor-made handouts which will help you learn Italian in real-life setting, expand your vocabulary and boost your confidence. Don’t worry if you’re a complete beginner or you already speak Italian, we’ll make sure that you get the right opportunity to communicate with native speakers and enrich your language skills. We also prepare a booklet containing information about the city and useful phrases to help you get around.

Don’t worry if you think you won’t be able to keep up with the group. We plan breaks during each day so that you can relax having a drink in a bar, spending some Euros shopping or heading back to the hotel.
