Tropical Ravine - Open House Belfast
Sat 22 October 2016, 11:00 – 12:00 BST
The Tropical Ravine is a late-Victorian Hot House designed in 1887 by the first General Super-intendent of Belfast Parks, Charles McKimm, who took advantage of the sloping site to accommodate a sunken ravine. The restoration of this listed Victorian building is now well underway with major works taking place throughout the building and its environs. To date the focus has been on removing most of the horticulture whilst the surrounding building fabric is either renewed or conserved.
To begin works, the Council’s park staff carefully relocated the existing flora and fauna which offers an unusual view of the building from within. This tour is an opportunity to see the ravine in an unusual empty state and gain insight into the project from the viewpoint of its construction, architecture, and services installations.
