Our annual event highlighting issues in politics and society in Northern Ireland

About this Event

Our annual event highlighting issues in politics and society in Northern Ireland this year pays tribute to two stalwarts of the Northern Ireland Peace Process leading to the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, BARONESS MAY BLOOD and LORD ALF DUBS.

MAY BLOOD, Baroness Blood MBE, is a former member of the House of Lords where she was a Labour peer from 1999 to 2018. Born and raised in Belfast, she worked in a linen mill from 1952 to 1989 and became an active member and shop stewart in the Transport and General Workers Union promoting women’s equality at work. She was a founding member of the Northern Ireland Women’s Coalition and was its campaign manager. She was a community worker in the Shankill area of West Belfast and a tireless campaigner for integrated education.

ALF DUBS was born in Prague and arrived in Britain on the “kindertransport”

in 1939. He was Labour MP for Battersea from 1979 to 1987 and subsequently Director of the Refugee Council. In 1994 he was appointed as a Labour peer and, following Labours victory in 1997, became Parliamentary Secretary at the Northern Ireland Office under Mo Mowlam in the period leading up to the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. He sponsored the “Dubs Amendment” to the 2016 Immigration Act allowing unaccompanied refugee children safe passage to Britain amidst the European migrant crisis. He is a member of the British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly and is a local Hammersmith resident.

May Blood and Alf Dubs will be in conversation with LORD CLIVE SOLEY, former Labour MP for Hammersmith from 1979 to 2005 and himself a shadow Opposition spokesman on Northern Ireland in the 1990s.
