Event description

Description

Jane Austen died two hundred years ago; but how did people deal with death in her time?

Join Georgian lady antiquarian Mrs. Leach for a small soiree at her Academy on the Halloween festival of All Soul's Day, to learn about funerary and mortuary customs and beliefs of Derby and beyond in the late 1700s and early 1800s.

Through archaeological and other historical evidence, explore death, bereavement, burial, mourning, and remembrance in the Regency era. Discover how – in this age of elegance – industrialisation and urbanisation gave rise to grisly graveyards; and how the search for scientific knowledge went hand in hand with gruesome treatment of the dead.

There are only a small number of places available for the event, which will last between an hour and one hour and a half, including discussion and opportunities to view and handle artefacts and other historical material.

Should a minimum number of ticket sales not be reached, the event may be cancelled / rescheduled for Christmas - New Year, or Halloween 2018 (in which case sold tickets will be refunded).

Some may find the content upsetting.
