Event description

Description

‘Why should they choose just this place to make crocks in’ (from ‘Clayhanger’ by Arnold Bennett)

To find out, join us as guests of the Potteries Heritage Society (Stoke-on-Trent’s Civic Society) on a visit to explore the unique character of Stoke-on-Trent and the Six Towns which make up the city.

For most of the day we will be based at the world famous Spode Works Museum. Our hosts have devised an excellent programme for us with opportunities to visit different sites to hear about local challenges and achievements and the current conservation and regeneration issues facing the area.

A guided walk round Stoke centre will focus on the history of the area’s development and look at the opportunities for regeneration through the evolving Neighbourhood Plan.

Another short walk will take us through the Ceramic City Stories district to the Secret Museum at Winkhill Mill. This visit will include some surprising pottery finds and give an insight into the tile-making techniques developed on this site 150 years ago.

A tour of the Spode Museum, ‘Blue Room’ and factory (with demonstrations) will introduce us to the challenges of regenerating the 250 year old site.

Alternatively there will also be an opportunity to explore the Museum and shop and ‘take in the town’ at your own pace.

At lunchtime the Spode Museum will provide homemade soup from its in-house cafe and artisan bread from the local ‘Bread in Common’ bakery at an additional cost of £3.50. Alternatively you may wish to bring a packed lunch. A room will be provided for our use at lunchtime. (There are not many options for lunch in the town).

Later in the day we will visit another heritage Potteries site – the Middleport Pottery, home of ‘Burleigh’ ware. The site shop will be open and traditional afternoon tea will be served at an additional cost of £15

A detailed timetable of the day will be available on the coach. Please arrive at Leeds Minster at 08.00 for a prompt 08.15 departure. We expect to arrive back in Leeds by 19.00
