Event description
Muslim Positions on Organ Donation and Transplantation, looking at Islamic law and ethics as well as Muslim donor and family sensitivities

About this Event

Organ Donation and Transplantation is a contentious area for the U.K. Muslim community. Rates of transplantation and acceptance of available organs are disproportionately high, whilst donation rates remain significantly lower.

The implications for patients on waiting lists is that donor matches are more difficult to find, and patients suffer for longer periods than the wider community waiting for organs. Many patients die waiting for organs because appropriate matches cannot be found.

Islamic legal and ethical frameworks present positions 'for' and 'against' organ donation and transplantation. Shaykh Abdal Aziz Ahmed will be presenting and explaining 'for' and 'against' positions as expressed by Muslim scholars, as well as discussing his own choice of being an organ donor and how he has navigated challenges when dealing with these issues personally and in the communities that he has served.

Mr. Omar Masood, consultant transplant surgeon, and his team will be presenting on the journey of the organ donor, post-death, with a discussion regarding trust and dignity during the process of organ donation. He will discuss dignity and care during process of retrieving organs from donors, and the impact this has on timeframes for burial (something that is important to Muslim communities, as burial as soon as possible after death is preferable).

Mr. Omar Masood will also discuss his personal journey into the field of organ transplantation and how he has committed to serving patients and families as a Muslim clinician in this field.

'Prevention' through Public Health will be a theme that is explored during this series of 3 conferences, with a particular focus on ‘Diabetes and Kidney Disease’, as well identifying areas of health inequalities.

In response to feedback from frontline clinicians from our first 'End of Life Care for Muslim Patients' conference in July 2019, Shaykh Abdal Aziz Ahmed and Shaykh Thaqib Mahmood will be presenting a workshop entitled: Muslim Death and Dying – De-mystified.

The purpose of this workshop will be to explain rituals, customs and religious acts during the process of death and dying that may be witnessed by care providers during end of life care. They will also explain post-death care and burial rituals. This may enable clinicians to more confidently engage with Muslim patients and families during end of life care.
