Event description

Description

This practical workshop is for up people who want to secure a charity board position in the short term, to train attendees to identify vacancies and prepare their cover letter and CV for charity board applications.

At the end of the workshop, participants will have:

  • outlined the cause, size, type and stage of charity they want to join;
  • mapped the skills, knowledge and capabilities that they can bring to a charity board;
  • thought about what they want to get out of a trusteeship;
  • drafted a template cover letter for use with charity trustee applications;
  • edited their CV for use with charity trustee applications;
  • learned how to research a shortlist of charities to approach speculatively, as well as used trustee finder sites to search for relevant opportunities;
  • learned about the common challenges charities face and the board’s role in tackling them;
  • understood how to find out more about a charity and its board;
  • created a longlist of charities they wish to research with a view to approaching them to become a trustee;
  • be fully prepared to approach charities after the workshop.

Before the workshop, attendees will need to fill in Getting on Board’s candidate form: http://gettingonboard.formstack.com/forms/candidate_form. This will help the candidate do some initial thinking about their requirements and skills, as well as helping Getting on Board to understand the range of skills and interests attendees have.

Attendees will need to bring to the workshop:

  1. an electronic version of their CV;
  2. a laptop or other device with internet and editing capabilities (to research charities on the internet, to edit their CV, to create a cover letter and to send emails).

We will also send you a reminder about this preparation.

Attendees should expect to put aside at least 3 hours in the fortnight after the workshop to make trusteeship applications, and then further time over the subsequent weeks for interviews and further applications.

If you want to become a charity trustee but want some extra support to make it happen, book your ticket now (and tell your friends!).

The speaker at this event will be Penny Wilson. Read more about Penny here: www.gettingonboard.org/penny

All fees received from this event will cover the costs of staging the event. Getting on Board is a registered charity and receives no government or grant funding to promote the marvels of joining a charity board!

Why not charge the cost of the event back to your employer as a professional development cost? 96% of trustees say that they learned new skills by becoming a trustee!
