Trustee Leadership Programme for Arts and Cultural Practitioners

‘10/10 because there is not a 10+!’

Christiane Kunz da Silva, Viiv Healthcare, Intensive Trustee Leadership Course 2017

Arts Fundraising & Philanthropy is thrilled to introduce a new programme, inspiring arts fundraising practitioners to become the future Trustees of some of the UK’s most exciting arts charities, and ensuring diversity across charity boards throughout the UK.

This course, with its specific focus on Arts fundraising and philanthropy has been adapted from the current award-winning national Trustee Leadership Programme, devised by Close Brothers Asset Management and Clothworkers Foundation.  It will be led by Michelle Wright, Programme Director of Arts Fundraising & Philanthropy and CEO ofCause4.

According to the Charity Aid Foundation, the average age of a Trustee is 57, only 36% in the UK are female, 8% BAME and 0.5% aged between 18-24 - fewer than 2% of charities have a young person serving on their board. This current under-representation across boards means that arts and cultural charities are missing out on a wider range of diverse perspectives, experiences and networks.

This enriching career development opportunity is offered over one day, the training covers the key responsibilities of Trustees and other regulatory issues, giving participants the skills and confidence that they need to become a Trustee.

As part of the course there’s a unique Trustee matching service, meaning that participants will meet charities and arts organisations looking for Trustees and will join our alumni network which provides ongoing opportunities to meet organisations looking to recruit Trustees. Participants can also receive accreditation from the Institute of Leadership Management for attendance and will be provided with access to further e-learning content to embed learning and to keep their skills up to date.

  • An overview of the charity sector and the importance of Trustees; and
  • Governance and strategic planning.
