Event description

Description

The lives of Sophia Duleep Singh and Udam Singh could not be more different – one a princess and suffragette, the other an assassin – yet both their stories illuminate defining moments in recent British and Indian history. In Anita Anand’s work, investigative journalism meets archival research to examine the relationship between Britain and India in the early twentieth century. Join Anand to explore the way in which archives bear witness to history and can give voice to hidden stories.

After the lecture, Anita will be holding a book signing of The Patient Assassin: A True Tale of Massacre, Revenge and the Raj.

Anita Anand is a political journalist who has presented television and radio programmes on the BBC for twenty years. She is the author of 3 books which, in one way or another, examine the relationship between Britain and India in the days of Empire: The Patient Assassin: A True Tale of Massacre, Revenge and the Raj, Sophia: Princess, Suffragette, Revolutionary and, with William Dalrymple, Koh-i-Noor: The History of the World's Most Infamous Diamond.

This talk is part of the Summer Lecture Series exploring the theme 'State and Society: Cultures of Communication', which is generously sponsored by the Friends of The National Archives. This year, the summer lecture series intersects with The National Archives’ research priorities on openness, access and use, and people, place and rule.

Each of the talks draws upon The National Archives’ rich collections and provides an opportunity to see the documents behind the research.

Our café remains open to the public when there are evening events taking place, serving a range of speciality coffees and teas, cakes, pastries, snacks, sandwiches, beer and wine.

As this event is free, not everyone who registers attends. To ensure we have a full house, we allocate more tickets than there are seats. We do our best to get the numbers right, but do sometimes have to disappoint people. Admission is on a first come, first served basis, so please arrive in good time for the start of the event.
