SCHEDULE FOR THE DAY:

09:30 Registration and coffee
10:00 WORKSHOP A

A1 - Douglas Butler, with Craig Barton:
"Autograph 4 for teaching KS3-4"
This session will introduce the use of attributes in Autograph 4, and look at the power of visualisation for KS3-4 topics, including some of the topics that are new to GCSE: inverse functions, estimating gradients of graphs, and completing the square.
Autograph 4: Download - Manual - Video - 4pp summary

A2 - Mick Blaylock, with Emma Soper:
"Spreadsheets for teaching Mathematics"
Excel is such an important tool, and studying it for Maths teaching has been an ingredient of all TSM workshops. This session will explore relative, absolute and mixed references for exploring number properties, patterns, series and modelling, including optimisation problems.

11:25 WORKSHOP B

B1 - Craig Barton, with Douglas Butler:
"Purposeful Practice with technology"
'Purposeful Practice' helps to develop procedural fluency alongside problem solving skills, and can help with the most difficult parts of teaching. We will discuss where to find the very best activities in the world, and how technology can enhance delivery and understanding.

B2 - Mick Blaylock, with Martin Withington:
"Finding and investigating Large Data Sets"
This session provides an opportunity to explore ways of working with the large data sets provided for the new A-levels by AQA, Edexcel and OCR. Additionally the web is heaving with data and TSM Resources has a good collection of downloadable data.

12:40 Lunch break
Philip Yorke, from CHARTWELL-YORKE, will display useful maths software such as 'MathType', 'MathsNet' and 'Teach A-Level Maths Powerpoints', on offer alongside Autograph 4 and Autograph books.

13:30 Welcome from Sue Pope, Associate Head of School of Teacher Education
and Professional Development, Manchester Metropolitan University
Plenary: "Technology for Secondary Mathematics"
Douglas Butler, Craig Barton and Mick Blaylock

14:45 WORKSHOP C

C1 - Douglas Butler with Martin Withington:
"Autograph 4 for teaching statistics"
This will include data handling topics in GCSE: effective ways to create single variable and bivariate sample data; how visualisation can secure understanding of scatter diagrams and the all-important topic of histograms, to insure a correct handling of frequency density.

C2 - Mick Blaylock, with Emma Soper:
"Calculators for teaching Mathematics"
Calculators are increasingly powerful and are seen as an essential tool in examinations that should be used ‘to compute summary statistics and access probabilities from standard statistical distributions’ in the new A-levels. This session will explore the best approaches to embed them in teaching. Please bring your own calculator.

16:00 Tea and depart

You can indicate your workshop preferences when you order your ticket. There is a discount for two or more teachers to attend from one school so that both strands are covered. Download instructions and serials for Autograph 4 will be sent out to the email address you enter when you register for this workshop.
