Event Details

Shared Parental Leave - how it works and will it make a difference?

Couples who are expecting to give birth to or adopt a child on or after 5 April 2015 will have access to new rights to Shared Parental Leave and Pay. These new rights will give parents more choice and flexibility over how they take time off work to care for a new child.

This free TUC seminar for trade unions and NGOs will explain how the new rights work and the issues unions and individuals will have to consider when negotiating policies and deciding what leave to take. It will also look at how the new rights compare to other countries' family leave policies and whether it is likely to lead to a fundamental change in patterns of leave taking in the UK, especially between men and women.

Speakers include:

  • Rachel Crasnow, barrister from Cloisters chambers and author of 'Family Rights and Employment Law' (2012), who will provide an overview of the new rights to Shared Parental Leave and Pay.
  • Peter Moss, Thomas Coram Research Institute and editor of 'Review of International Leave Policies' (2013), who will give a comparative perspective.
