Event description

Description

World events capture the headlines, but there is also a hidden history that is just as fascinating and which deserves our attention. Come and hear local voices describe life in the Severn Vale decades ago, and learn about research that will give new meaning to places you thought you knew.

This talk by A Forgotten Landscape’s Tale of the Vale volunteers will be divided into two sections:

Stephen Carroll, one of the oral history volunteers will describe how oral history connects the present with our forgotten past, and share recorded memories of putcher fishing, cider making, surviving the blitz and how nuclear physics was brought to the Severn Vale. Oral history interviews with nearly 50 local people have been recorded by volunteers for the project; from fishermen and farmers to nuclear engineers and bridge builders. The aim has been to give the Vale a voice, and create a record of how people have experienced change in the Severn Vale through the past century.

We will then hear about the work of the history research volunteers. This talk will be led by Liz Napier, a resident of Shirehampton, who became interested in local history through many years of genealogy research. She chose to study trade and exploration in the Tudor period, which proved to be fascinating, linked to the Chester family of Knole Park, Almondsbury. Liz will be joined by other volunteers to share their discoveries about the history of the A Forgotten Landscape area.

This talk is free but you must book a place.
