Event description

Description

Over generations, local people evolved a range of unique methods for harvesting the resources of the River Severn. Lave net fishing is a traditional method that has been practiced for hundreds if not thousands of years. Almost exclusive to the Severn Estuary in Wales and England, lave nets are used to catch salmon. This fascinating talk by Martin Morgan will include a demonstration of how the lave net is made and used. It will also look at examples of fishing baskets once used on the Severn and will include a short film.

Martin Morgan is a Secretary of the Black Rock Lave Net Fishermen’s Association, the last lave net fishery in Wales, just over the river from Severn Beach. He has many years of experience - he was first taken lave net fishing by an uncle at around 10 years of age and is now the second oldest lave net fisherman in Wales!
