Speaker: James Geddes, Research Software Engineering (The Alan Turing Institute)

Data science deals with data. Much of the data that we use - pretty much all corporate data, for example - is stored and managed in a /relational database/, the foundations of which were described by Edgar Codd in 1969. Notwithstanding the recent interest in alternative models (sometimes called "NoSQL") the relational model is likely to be ubiquitous for a long time to come and you should know what it is and how to use it.

In this class I will describe the relational model (both in theory and in practice!) and we shall play around with SQL, the standard language for retrieving and storing data in the relational model.

This is an introductory class (no advanced session planned)
