Event description
One of three 'Sandpit' events taking place in 2021-22, part of our partnership with the Alan Turing Institute

About this event

The Sustainability sandpit is a two-day event scheduled to take place from 14.00 to 16.00 on Weds 17 and Thurs 18 November. Please note that this is one event across two days and participants are expected to attend on both days.

We are keen to host a sandpit which brings together a range of academic and non-academic stakeholders to discuss and devise research projects where data science and AI can play a key role in delivering sustainable outcomes. Areas could include (but will not be limited to):

  • Sustainable consumption
  • Sustainable production and manufacturing
  • Sustainable employment
  • Sustainable planning
  • Sustainable transport

Participants will develop proposals over the two days and our review panel will award funding for a number of six-month feasibility studies (~£10-15k per successful proposal).

Participants will have an opportunity suggest potential topics in the build up to the event. This input will be reviewed and sorted before the event and will help to define the starting point for proposal discussions.

Please note that due to the nature of this funding, each funded project must be led by a researcher from The University of Manchester.

Intellectual Property rights will be subject to terms and conditions as agreed between the Alan Turing Institute and The University of Manchester.

Please share this invitation with suitable collaborators: this sandpit is an opportunity for researchers, private, public and third sector to come together and devise research proposals for projects on topics related to sustainability and data science and AI.

Background:

Through our partnership with the Alan Turing Institute, The University of Manchester’s Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (IDSAI) is hosting a number of ‘sandpit’ events in Autumn-Winter 2021-22, with input from the related Turing Institute programmes.

IDSAI is one of the The University of Manchester's Digital Futures network themes.

Organiser Digital Futures

Organiser of Turing-UoM Sandpits 2021-22: Sustainability

Digital Futures is a highly interdisciplinary network which operates across the whole range of the University’s digital research.

The aim of Digital Futures is to present a coherent overview of our digital research activity to external stakeholders and bring together our research communities to explore new research areas and address strategic opportunities.

We group our activity around themes that encapsulate our broad research capabilities and the challenges to which these can be applied. These themes do not operate as self-contained entities; however, there is considerable synergy and overlap between them, and many of our academics are involved in a number of capability and challenge themes.
