Event description

Description

This outdoor sketching session revisits some of the locations drawn by Turner in Berwick. This is a repeat of the workshop held on 4th June. We start with a 30 minute tour of the Turner exhibition led by Prof Maria Chester, followed by refreshments, then Gill Walton will lead a two hour session sketching outdoors on the quayside. Gill is based in the Scottish Borders and if you would like to know more about Gill’s background and work please go to her website at http://gillwalton.co.uk

Looking closely at the materials and techniques used by Turner in his sketchbooks, we will produce a series of quick sketches and responses to the Berwick scenes around the Granary Gallery that Turner loved. We will look at the different ways he treated architecture, sea and skyscapes. This is a stand alone workshop although your sketches can be used in workshops 4 and 5 if desired.

These workshops are part of a programme of art workshops, tours and lectures based around the exhibition ‘Turner: Northern Exposure’ which runs at the Granary Gallery in Berwick upon Tweed from 25th May to 13th October 2019 (Tues - Sun 11 -4. Closed Mon). Entry to the exhibition is free.

Each workshop will be led by a local artist and tutor who will help you explore different techniques, approaches, media and subjects in your personal response to Turner’s visionary art. Beginners to more experienced students are equally welcome.

Numbers for each workshop are limited to 10, so early booking is advised.

Colours favoured by Turner were: Indigo, Prussian blue, Cobalt, Indian yellow, Chrome yellow, Indian red, Chrome red, and Rose madder.

Materials: please bring a sketchbook, pencils, watercolour brushes, water media paint and paper. You may wish to stretch watercolour paper in advance. Gill will bring a selection of other materials for you to experiment with. Please come suitably dressed for outdoor work, including sun hat and suncream. We will work indoors if the weather is bad.

Easels are provided.
