Event description

Description

In this workshop, contemporary landscape artist Lynda Marwood will help you produce a piece of work in your preferred medium inspired by close study of a Turner painting or sketch from the exhibition at the Granary Gallery. We start with a 30 minute tour of the Turner exhibition led by Prof Maria Chester, followed by refreshments, then Lynda Marwood will lead a two-hour workshop. There will be a 30 minute break for lunch and you can bring your own lunch or eat in the Granary cafe. There will be a further practical session with Lynda from 1 -3.00pm. We will start with a collaborative grid painting exercise in water based media, and then work on a re-imagining and reinterpretation on an image from the exhibition in the medium of your choice. Lynda is based in the Scottish Borders and if you would like to know more about Lynda’s background and work please go to her website at http://lyndamarwood.com

Session 1. Group activity: starting with a collaborative grid painting exercise; a copy of one of Turner’s paintings from the exhibition will be divided up into ten rectangles, each student will randomly select a rectangle (the full image will not be revealed to students prior to this exercise). This will allow the group to look at Turner’s technique in detail. These individual sections will then be transcribed and interpreted using water based media. On completion these paintings will brought together to recreate the whole.

Session 2. An exercise in looking: You will choose a favourite painting or sketch from the exhibition and will sketch in graphite pencil in sketchbooks in front of the image for a short period of time, looking at and absorbing the detail and your emotional response to it whilst taking notes. Then take this experience back to the “Studio” setting and re-imagine and reinterpret in the medium of your choice.

These workshops are part of a programme of art workshops, tours and lectures based around the exhibition ‘Turner: Northern Exposure’ which runs at the Granary Gallery in Berwick upon Tweed from 25th May to 13th October 2019 (Tues - Sun 11 -4. Closed Mon). Entry to the exhibition is free.

Each workshop will be led by a local artist and tutor who will help you explore different techniques, approaches, media and subjects in your personal response to Turner’s visionary art. Beginners to more experienced students are equally welcome.

Numbers for each workshop are limited to 10, so early booking is advised.

Materials: please bring a sketchbook, pencils, watercolour brushes, water media paint and paper for the first part of the day. You may wish to stretch watercolour paper in advance. Your final work will be in the medium of your choice, so bring the materials and mounts that you will need. Lynda will bring a selection of other materials for you to experiment with.

Easels are provided.
