Turning 18 and Transitional Safeguarding
Overview
Many youth justice professionals work with children who cross the threshold into adulthood. The transition impacts practice and has significant impact for young people, related to;
- rights and protections,
- which services and support are available or
- being sentenced for something that happened many years ago.
- Delays in charging leading to delays in necessary support
- There are additional barriers for care experienced children transitioning into adulthood
At the webinar we will be joined by
Dez Holmes and Lisa Smith from Research in Practice (RIP) [link] who will explain Transitional Safeguarding. Transitional Safeguarding emphasises that harm, trauma, and development do not stop at 18, withdrawing support at 18 is detrimental leaving young people without support during this critical life stage. Transitional Safeguarding is a response to this, it is a concept for whole system change with the aim that all young people have a positive journey to adulthood, irrespective of legal status or diagnosis.
Jade Ecobichon-Gray of Mindset Matters will speak about a trailblazing programme with Camden Council and Camden Virtual School aimed at helping more care leavers gain access to higher education through Inner Circle Education Trust . Her research highlights the complexities of accessing higher education for care leavers and aligns with the recent report by the Children’s Commissioner about care experienced children and the criminal legal system.
