Turning Concern into Intervention (The Emperor’s New Clothes)
Overview
The event explores how psychological safety and leadership responsibility can transform workplace culture in the construction industry, using Hans Christian Andersen’s tale of "The Emperor’s New Clothes" as an interesting metaphor for modern day health, safety, and environment challenges.
In this session, participants learn that observing unsafe behaviours, at all levels of the organisation (on site or in the boardroom), without acting is akin to watching the emperor’s parade in silence. The presentation emphasises the importance of speaking up about unsafe practices and or decision making, highlighting how apathy and risk tolerance can lead to devastating outcomes. By drawing parallels to the story, we illustrate how psychological safety ( and the Douglas OHI It’s Ok Programme) and giving people permission to speak up without fear—is essential for constructive intervention and improved safety outcomes.
