Turning Points in Modern Jewish History by Professor Shirli Gilbert

This bespoke short course traces the tumultuous journey of the Jews from the medieval ghetto to statehood and beyond, centered around four pivotal moments in history: the Dreyfus Affair, the Kishinev pogrom, Kristallnacht, and the Six-Day war. Presented by Shirli Gilbert, Professor of Modern Jewish History and Director, Parkes Institute for Jewish/non-Jewish Relations, University of Southampton.

The course will present a broad, engaging overview, zooming in on significant, unusual, and extraordinary episodes along the way, all taught through original primary documents. No preparation necessary.

We recommend you attend the full course to gain meaningful insight, skills and in-depth debate.

£80 for the full course.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

We recommend particpants are 16+.

We request photo ID on arrival to be shown to security on arrival at the venue.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

It is free to park on the street very near to the venue. Highgate is the nearerst tube station.


Parking will not be allowed on the site directly outside. There will be space for 1 disabled visitor, please email:booking@smglc.org.uk to request a space.

A precise map and transport links will be sent out 1 week prior to the start of the course to confirmed attendees.

What can I bring into the event?

You will not need any specific materials. You may wish to bring pens and paper if you want to take notes. We ask that you do not bring food or drink into the venue.
