About this event
Robert Gutierrez and Gabriela Ramirez-Guevara present an intimate repertoire of Andean folk songs for voice and guitar. This concert offers a unique opportunity to experience the soulful depth of Andean song and its wide diversity of rhythms, such as Huaynos, Chuscadas, Harawis, Mulizas, Carnavales, and more. Many of these songs are sung in Quechua, the indigenous language of the Andes.
Robert is a British-born multi-instrumentalist of Peruvian descent based in London, with a special interest in Andean music. From a young age, Robert has studied piano and classical guitar. Growing up he has been exposed to a wide variety of music, and on various trips to Peru and Bolivia, has developed an intense passion for traditional music of the Andes. During this time, he has studied with many respected Andean musicians and has learnt to play native instruments such as the quena, sikus, charango, and Ayacuchano style guitar. Robert has collaborated with many Andean groups based in London, including Q’orymarka, Sikuris sin Fronteras, Qhaway, el Parnaso Hyspano, Balia Peru UK, and the Monteverde Consort, as well as performing regularly as a solo Andean guitarist. He has performed in many notable venues and festivals such as St Marylebone festival, Pullens festival, Newham town hall, British museum, Horniman Museum, Cambridge Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, Royal Holloway, SOAS, and Imperial College London. More recently, he has presented and performed his personal research on Andean guitar tunings and techniques at the Latin American music seminar 2025 organised by the Centre for Latin American & Caribbean Studies.
Gabriela is a Peruvian-born vocalist based in London, with a background in classical and choral singing and a revitalised passion for Andean culture. She began her musical studies in Peru as a member of the National Children’s Choir of Peru, where she trained in choral and classical singing until the age of ten. The choir specialised in folklore music as well. After moving to Spain, she continued her musical education, studying piano, music theory, and vocal studies. She joined the prestigious Orfeó Català Young Choir, of which she was a member until the age of eighteen. She later further expanded her repertoire and performance experience.Upon relocating to London, Gabriela resumed her voice training with special focus on Latin American folk music and reconnected with her Andean roots. Through her involvement with various cultural groups from Latin America, she has participated as a singer and dancer in various cultural events celebrating Latin American heritage. More recently, she has begun performing at live events such as Rainbow Chicha at the Bath House, bringing together her training and love for traditional Andean music and dances.
