Friday 18th January 2019

Costa Coffee

13a Museum Street, York YO1 7DT (near Museum Gardens)

9.30am - 2.00pm

I like to think of Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) as the free jazz of photography. The only rule is that there are no rules and your imagination is the only barrier to your creativity. You are free to create something wonderful using a combination of different movements and camera settings and there are only two requirements for this workshop:

1. A DSLR or mirrorless camera which allows you to shoot in manual mode so that you can change the shutter speed, ISO and aperture (I will explain all that on the day if you’re not used to shooting in manual mode, so don’t worry) together with preferably a zoom lens. The 18-55mm kit lenses which come with most cameras are great for this, no need to buy anything extra. If you don’t have a zoom lens, no problem. Come with what you have and feel free to email me if you’re unsure.

2. An open mind and sense of humour.

We will meet at Costa Coffee close to York’s lovely Museum Gardens and over a coffee I will explain the camera settings, different movements and techniques and show you the effects you can achieve relatively easily via my own images.

Theory out of the way, we will head into Museum Gardens and start putting the theory into practice. This is where the open mind and sense of humour come into play. You’ll get better results if you relax and give your imagination free reign and ignore the funny looks, we will get from passers by as we twist and shake with our cameras. This is nothing like you will have experienced before and it’s a lot of fun!

From the park we will head into town and practice taking ICM images of people, buildings, cars, buses, trains and anything else that catches our imagination.

We’ll take a break part way through and head to a café or pub to have a look at our images and see where we’re at. Then we will head out again until around 12.30 -1pm when we’ll find somewhere to sit and have a final look at the day’s images, give each other feedback, ask and answer questions and talk a bit about post processing the images.

This is designed to be an fun but informative workshop and my personal style is very relaxed. I am passionate about ICM and you can be sure I will do everything I can to help you get the best from the day. Workshop ends at 2pm.

Please bring:

Your camera

An SD card with a good capacity. You WILL take a lot of images!

A spare battery, particularly if shooting mirrorless.

Appropriate clothing because we will be outside whatever the weather.

Money for drinks, lunch etc.

We will walk around York a fair bit, but not fast, so please be prepared for that.

If you have a tablet onto which it’s possible to download a few photos, please feel free to bring it (along with card reader). It will help when discussing post processing your images.
