Two Day Black and White Film and Darkroom Workshop
Sat, 8 Apr 2017, 10:00 – Sun, 9 Apr 2017, 16:00 BST
Two Day Black and White Film and Darkroom Workshop £195 is inclusive of film, papers and chemistry.
This two day workshop will guide you through the process of shooting film, getting it proccessed, creating a contact sheet and then printing an image which you have shot for you to take home. If you don't have your own film camera but have always fancied working with film, Keith has a camera for you to use. We'll take a roll of Ilford film on location in Saltburn by the sea, one of the jewels of the North Yorkshire Coast to get some great shots. Returning back to the studio and darkroom to process the film, produce a contact sheet and create a print of your work to take home.
What you will learn.
On the first morning you’ll spend some time getting some great shots in Saltburn by the Sea where Keith will show you the process of how to assess the correct exposure using a hand held light meter rather than using the camera’s light meter. Consistency of achieving the correct exposure every time is paramount.
After lunch we'll be in the darkroom where Keith will guide you through processing the film you have just shot whilst giving you an overview of the different effects the chemistry, timings and temperatures will have on the finished negative. You’ll then go on to create your own contact sheet where, with Keith, you can review your images to choose the one you would like to print to take home.
It's all about the printing. Having chosen the image, you would like to print Keith will take you through the next stage which is choosing the chemistry and paper selection, how an enlarger works. He’ll talk about the importance of safe lights, how to make test strips and how to use them to assess how you are going to print your final print which will include paper grade choice, correct exposure, dodging and burning and split grade printing.
The workshop is kept very smal to a maximum of two people so that throughout the two days you are encouraged you to ask as many questions as possible, so that when you leave you have had a richly rewarding experience, filled with enthusiasm and eager to continue your journey being an analogue photographer and darkroom technician.
“The artisan art of analogue black and white photography is a beautiful, engaging process taking you on an addictive path to expressing yourself and creating an individual piece of art.” Keith Moss.
