Two-Day Programming Course for GCSE and A Level

Thursday and Friday 30th and 31st May 2019

Stranmillis University College

Gain the skills and confidence to teach Python programming to pupils undertaking the new CCEA GCSE specification in Digital Technology, or who are following a GCSE Computing qualification with a UK examination board. This intensive event will start at the beginning, taking you through all of the key skills required for Computing at this level.

We are offering 2 courses here one aimed at GCSE and the other at A level, There will be 2 teachers for these courses

Day 1 - GCSE Overview and Understanding Programming:
Input / output and assignment
Selection and nested selection
Iteration and looping constructs – While and for Loops
Overview of the GCSE concepts; assessment criteria
Developing applications in Python

Day 2 - Advanced Skills: Identifying the key characteristics of pupil success at GCSE
Creating user interfaces, validation, formatted output
Lists, data manipulation
Advanced variable assignment; data types; selection
String manipulation vs list operations
Use of functions and passing parameters
Advanced Python – data storage and persistence

A level:

Coursework skills for success:

  • Coursework ideas and complexity guides
  • Workflow and project managements
  • Graphical User Interfaces
  • Object-Oriented Programming, including inheritance and polymorphism
  • SQL-based relational database backend
  • A look at some game creation techniques
  • We will look at Python and C#

All materials and resources used on this course will be made available to all delegates after the course.


Darren Travi & Ilia Avroutine

There are two teachers, both of whom have extensive experience of teaching Computer Science at GCSE and A Level, and who are extensively involved with a large Examination Board through the provision of resources, training, assessment and exams.

Darren Travi
Head of Computing at the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe and a CAS Master Teacher, Darren leads the South Buckinghamshire CAS Hub. He has taught A-Level Computer Science since the 1990's, and GCSE Computing since the course started in 2010.

Ilia Avroutine
Ilia has taught A-Level Computer Science for over ten years, having previously taught Computing in Canada. He is Head of Computer Science at the Wetherby Senior School in London. He has a wide experience of teaching Computing and has co-authored a number of popular resources and textbooks.
